Tier 1 Basic words that commonly appear in spoken language.  

  • Affiliation - Belonging to…as in that John Lewis and many, many others had an affiliation with the  Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.  

  • Civil Disobedience - Disobeying a law or policy as a way of showing that the law/policy is unfair. 

  • Segregation (during the Civil Rights Movement) - The practice of keeping different races separate  from each other.
  • Resiliency - The ability to do what a person thinks is right even when friends and/or colleagues  disagree; that is, the ability to stand up for what you think is the right thing to do.

  • Discrimination - Racial discrimination deprived southern blacks of decent jobs and schools and of  the right to vote during the time of the Civil Rights Movement.
Tier 2 High frequency words that occur across a range of content areas.  Because of their lack of redundancy in oral language, Tier 2 words present challenges to students who primarily meet them in print. Most instruction will be concentrated here.

Tier 3 Words that are not frequently used except in specific content areas or domains.  Tier 3 words are central to building knowledge and conceptual understanding within the various academic domains and should be integral to instruction of content.

  • Grassroots organization - A true "grassroots movement" isn't organized by political forces - instead, a "grassroots  movement" springs up spontaneously due to some pressing issue that a community, organization, or  group of like-minded people feel strongly needs to be changed or enhanced.
