Discussion Questions:

1. Today’s reading includes 3 interactions with Malcolm X.

  • John Lewis meets Malcolm X for the first (and last) time in today’s reading (pps. 134- 137).
  • While Martin Luther King, Jr. is jailed in Selma, Malcolm X comes and speaks to the Civil Rights workers (pps. 167 - 169)
  • News of Malcolm X’s assassination and parts of the eulogy (pps 178 - 181)
    • Based on the reading, what are your impressions of Malcolm X and his style of leadership?

2. Although almost all SNCC members refused to join Dr. King in his historic showdown in Selma, Alabama,  John Lewis’ decides to join Dr. King.

  • What does his decision tell you about John Lewis? (pps. 183 - 187)

3. Time and time again, John Lewis demonstrated resilience, strength of spirit, flexibility and toughness.  Think of times in your own life when everyone wants to do something that you do not want to do, or everyone doesn’t want to do something that you do want to do.

  • Do you think it is hard to be resilient and do what you think is right even if all of your friends are doing something else?  Be prepared to share your answer.
