What is Coding?
Coding is short for computer programming. It is a set of instructions a computer can understands and execute.
Coding USED to be hard, and with a steep learning curve. Early programming languages took A LONG TIME to learn. Thankfully, learning to code today is as simple as playing an iPad or online game. If you can play Angry Birds you can code (and even if you can’t play Angry Birds you can code)!
What is Hour of Code?
Hour of Code is a program put on by code.org to encourage millions of students around the world to spend an hour coding during the week of December (Dec. 5th-9th). Code.org offers teacher and student free tutorials, lesson plans, support, and games that will teach beginning to advanced coders.
How to run an Hour of Code in your Lancer Time
On December 6th during Lancer Time teachers will have the option to have their lancer time classes participate in an Hour of Code. Students can participate with or without laptops or devices.
There will be no switch during Lancer Time on Dec. 6th so students can participate in hour of code.
Students Participating in Hour of Code in the Library, Dec. 6th and 8th (during Lancer Time)
Students will also have the opportunity to sign up to participate in the hour of code in the Lee High School Library. Those students who sign up in advance will have a pass that will be delivered to their lancer time teachers. At the switch students will come to the library to participate in the hour of code. Students who come to the library will be participating in the online hour of code tutorials. Teachers, librarians and volunteers will help students when questions arise. Students are encouraged to bring their own device and those students without a laptop can use a school supplied device in the library. To sign up, students can come to the library.
