1. Recap

  • Essential Question: In the course of history, to what extent can one person really make a difference?
  • Brainstorm what do we need to know about a person - to determine to what extent they made a difference
  • Select a person of interest
  • Popular vs. Scholarly sources
  • Find & investigate background information using U.S. History in Context or World History in Context
  • Noodletools - Set up project, share project with teacher drop box, create citations using Quick Cite Copy & Paste feature
  • Popular vs. Scholarly sources

  • Create a citation for the primary source using: Quick Cite: copy and Paste
  • Create 6 Notecards based on a combination of the background information article (library day 1) and the Primary Source Document

2. Project Details

  • Library Days 1, 2, 3 & 4 will be worth 50 points
  • Library Days 1, 2 & 3 students will complete a series of steps to learn about the research process, find information in support of the Essential Question and in particular about your Person of Interest
  • Library Day 4 students  will create a detailed outline (to include at least 6 in text citations) that will support an APEC essay about your person of interest
    • Assertion-Proof-Explanation-Connection

      "A" - a statement of what you intend to prove

      "P" - some evidence or examples that illustrate the assertion (i.e. in text citations)

      "E" - an explanation of how the evidence proves the assertion

      "C" - a statement connecting the assertion to the thesis of your paper
  • Library Day 5 is worth 80 points (20 points for each part of the APEC)
    • Timed writing using your outline (45 minutes)
    • Person of Interest game

4. Finding Primary Source

Depending upon the Person of Interest, select one of the following databases:

  • Browse Topics

  • Select your person of interest

  • On the right hand side of the screen under On This Page. select Primary Sources

  • Select a Primary Source document that is either a speech given by your Person of Interest OR something written by your Person of Interest (4 pts)

  • Email the document to yourself & cc Mrs. Marquet on the email (mbmarquet@fcpsschools.net) (3 pts)

  • Cite the document in Noodletools - using Quick cite copy and paste (3 pts)

    • Be mindful to select the correct type of document in Noodletools - this will be different for everyone

  • If you are on a school computer feel free to print the article

  • Otherwise download the document and save it to your files so you can complete the next step.

  • Read highlight & annotate to document
  • Notecards in Noodletools (6 notecards 5 pts each total of 30 pts.)
    • Today's notecards can be based on your background knowledge reading AND/OR your primary source reading
    • Background information notecards should answer questions such as
      • Who?
      • What?
      • Where?
      • When
      • Why? 
    • Primary source notecards should include information such as:
      • What is the context of the speech/writing?
      • When did it happen?
      • Where did it happen?
      • Why was the speech given?  Why was the document written?
      • Why did you select this particular speech/writing
      • How does it help answer the Essential Question?
      • Why is it inspiring?
