How can you advocate for change in your community and the world?

Project Overview

English 9/Government PBL Project: Immigration

For the next several weeks, you will be working in English 9 and Government to complete a “real-world” project on Immigration.  After deciding your focus, you will complete research, write a persuasive letter to a Member of Congress, and give a presentation to your peers.   We will be working in-class and at the library.   

Part 1. Research

For this project, you will use the research skills you learned in English 9 and Government this year.  Specifically, you will:

 Narrow the focus of your research by picking one topic:

  • Border Wall
  • Sanctuary Cities
  • Gun Control
  • Climate Change

 Write a position statement (argument) about the one topic you select.

 Evaluate at least 3 sources about your topic  using the CARRoTS criteria, including

  • 2 written sources (e.g., news article, legislation, video interview) and
  • 1 visual sources (e.g., artwork, photograph, political cartoon)

 Take Notes from at least 3 sources

  • For 2 written sources
    • 1 quote (Copy Text Exactly with “ ”)
    • 1 paraphrase (Replace and Rearrange)
    • Explain why quotes and paraphrases are important to topic
  • For 1 visual source
    • 1 description
    • Explain why the image is important to topic

 Cite at least 3 sources

Part 2.  Advocacy Campaign

Next, you will create an advocacy campaign about your topic.  Specifically, you will:

 Find images that are free to reuse

Create a message to accompany the image

Use Adobe Spark, Google Draw or other approved program to create a social media campaign

Part 3. Presentation

Last, you will present your research and social media campaign. 

For this presentation, you will:

 Share your social media campaign image

 Give a 3-5 minute oral presentation on your advocacy message
