English 9/Government PBL Project: Immigration

For the next several weeks, you will be working in English 9 and Government to complete a “real-world” project on Immigration.  After deciding your focus, you will complete research, write a persuasive letter to a Member of Congress, and give a presentation to your peers.   We will be working in-class and at the library.

Part 1. Research

For this project, you will use the research skills you learned in English 9 and Government this year.  Specifically, you will:

Narrow the focus of your research by picking one topic about Immigration

  • Border Wall
  • Immigration Ban
  • Sanctuary Cities

Write a position statement (argument) about the one topic you select.

Evaluate at least 3 sources about your topic  using the CARRoTS criteria, including

  • 2 written sources (e.g., news article, legislation, video interview) and
  • 1 visual sources (e.g., artwork, photograph, political cartoon)

Take Notes from at least 3 sources

  • For 2 written sources
    • 1 quote (Copy Text Exactly with “ ”)
    • 1 paraphrase (Replace and Rearrange)
    • Explain why quotes and paraphrases are important to topic
  • For 1 visual source
    • 1 description
    • Explain why the image is important to topic

 Cite at least 3 sources

Part 2.  Advocacy Letter

Next, you will plan and draft an advocacy letter about your topic.  Specifically, you will:

Review biographies of three Members of Congress

Identify one Member of Congress to whom you want to write

Write a persuasive letter to your Member of Congress on your advocacy message

Part 3. Presentation

Last, you will create a presentation about your topic.  For this presentation, you will:

Prepare a visual image (e.g., text, photograph, artwork, political cartoon, collage) that supports your advocacy message

Give a 3-5 minute oral presentation on your advocacy message
