Today's agenda

Objective: provide background information about the Civil Rights Movement in preparation for Lee's One Book initiative.  Everyone at Lee will be reading the book March by John Lewis

Teachers:

  • Begin with a discussion about civil rights today.
    • Essential Question: How do civil rights apply to today's world?
  • Show the introductory/background knowledge PPT   There is a video on slide 8, so you will need audio equipment
  • We would  it if you would take pictures and tweet about our One Book program.
  • Please use #LeeHSReads and/or #MarchwithLeeHS and include @repjohnlewis in your tweets.

Extension Activity Options:

  • Based on the definition(s) of the word march and the information presented in this PowerPoint, make a prediction of what this book will be about. Discuss and share as a class.
  • If your students want to continue with the introductory lesson, slide 10 describes the “Create a Collage” activity.  This is a great product to display in your classroom!

** Thank you to the music department for complying a playlist of Civil Rights Era music to supplement our learning (see bottom box on the right).
